In today’s world, you can buy almost anything with the click of a button. Clothes, groceries, electronics—you name it. But when it comes to something as important (and technical) as a mobility scooter, buying online can quickly turn from “convenient” to “nightmare.”
At Pinnacle Mobility Scooters in Sun City, Arizona, we’ve heard it all from customers who tried the online route before coming to us for help. If you’re considering ordering a scooter from a big-box website, here’s what you can actually expect.
A Giant Box Shows Up on Your Doorstep
Imagine the size of a water heater box—that’s about what you’ll see dropped off at your front door. No warning, no assistance, just a giant, awkward, and extremely heavy package sitting there waiting for you.
Getting It Inside
Now comes the fun part: somehow wrestling that massive box into your house or apartment. For many people, especially seniors or those with mobility challenges, this task is nearly impossible. Online sellers don’t provide delivery help. They don’t bring it inside, set it up, or make sure it’s usable. You’re on your own.
The Unpacking Mess
You finally manage to get the box inside. Next, you’re greeted by a tidal wave of packing material—styrofoam, plastic wrap, and cardboard that seems to multiply as you pull things out. If you’re lucky, it’s not filled with dreaded styrofoam that scatters into every corner of your living room.
Assembly Time
Here’s where things really get tricky. That “ready to use” scooter you saw online actually comes in pieces. You’ll need to connect parts, tighten bolts, adjust the tiller, and make sure the electrical connections are correct.
For us at Pinnacle, assembling and adjusting a scooter takes about an hour—and we do this every day. For someone without experience, it’s frustrating, confusing, and can even be dangerous if the scooter isn’t assembled properly.
Missing or Damaged Parts
Let’s say you get through the assembly process—only to realize something is missing, cracked, or doesn’t work. Now you’re stuck on hold with a giant online retailer’s call center, hoping to reach someone who understands your issue. You might wait weeks for replacement parts—or be told to repack the entire scooter and ship it back at your expense.
The Aftermath
Congratulations—you somehow got it all put together and it’s working. But now you’re left with a small mountain of trash: giant cardboard panels, sheets of plastic, and chunks of styrofoam. Getting that all broken down and into your trash can (or hauled off to a recycling center) is a chore in itself.
